Katherine, I had a similar problem with my 90 Accord. On the 90 Accord, there are TWO temperature sensors, one for each cooling fan (check to see if you have one fan or two). If you have two, you will have to find out which sensor is bad, or replace them both. Also, you should check to see that your coolant is in good shape.

When your car won't start, pop the hood. This will cool your engine down faster and you shouldn't have to wait as long to restart your engine. My problem was not as bad as yours, but I only have to wait a couple of minutes. I also carry a portable restart battery. They cost $30-$40 at Kragens and provide me with additional insurance that I won't get stuck somewhere.
