Subject: Since the White Knight is away, and can’t delete this ;-)

… poor Glory, been trying to keep house all by yourself!! Hahaha, I’m sorry, I’ve been derelict in my duties as well. I’ve decided to say SOMETHING about Xander, at least on a weekly basis.

Now, I do not have warm and fuzzy feelings about the character of Xander. So what I’m hoping here is to spur on some dialog – that will be my role. Antagonize Xander lovers out of lurkdom.

Xander so far in S7:

Episode 1 - Lessons: Xander came out of the gates with guns blazing. He was responsible acting, wore a suit, seemed on top of things, didn’t seem to be at a loss for words, was in charge, had the family thing going with Dawn and Buffy (you know big brother type thing going with both of them). All in all I thought, hot damn, Xander’s matured. Xander will be interesting this year.

Episode 2 – Beneath Me: Still with the family thing going on, and I enjoyed the comedic moments during the bar scene with the relationships (they were all a mess;-.) He needs to take the high road with Anya. Sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn’t.

Episode 3 – Same Time, Same Place: He was back to S3 Xander!!! WTF. Gone was the suit, even his hairstyle reverted. Now, I do ascribe to the notion that this is his role on BTVS. The bumbling, good-hearted, schlumpy friend that Joss sees himself being in a past life. But for Joss sakes, he can still grow up just a little. Change his appearance, or clothes. Ok, enough about aesthetics.

Episode 4 – Help: Condemnatory Xander was back with a pretty snide remark about Cassie. He sums it up in his oh so inimitable style by writing her off as a loser. Why does he seem to be less tolerant that others? Just a question.

I want Xander from S1 to come back. Sweet, a little snarky, but not too critical, cute, lovable, eager, and FUNNY!!!

Thoughts, comments, suggestions, flames??!!

The preceding comments are not the thoughts or feelings of the King of the Board and should not be misconstrued as such (as if). (Kiss to UHC)

... which to many may sound like regressing. But I don't think so. I think S1 Xander was somehow more mature!!! Go figure.

Right there with ya Phae. I do like Xander, but I have a lot of problems with him too, and I would like to see some Xander lovers come out to discuss some of these points about their favorite character.

I was a little disgusted with Xander in episodes 3 and 4, so much so that I have to wonder why ME is keeping him in such a rut. The good-hearted, jokey slacker-guy persona Xander sported in high school and the year after was endearing, but now it just seems pathetic. Every other character has changed, and it just doesn't seem real that Xander wouldn't also have changed.

One thing I particularly wish they would do something about is Xander's tendency to jump to conclusions--always wrong ones, I might add. The way he wrote Cassie off after seeing her Web poetry really made him look like an ass. Dismissing her as "someone who's got a hard-on for the big dirt nap" was the latest example of the way he rushes to judgement--and jumps to the wrong conclusions. This just makes him look like a judgemental dolt. Since part of Xander's appeal is that he's the everyday guy, the schlumpy friend with no superpowers, it would be nice if they made him a little more perceptive. Also, I'm getting tired of hearing all about what a great heart Xander has but I haven't seen any evidence of that on the screen for quite a while now.

[> Just like women, always seeking to change a man....... -- Lijdrec, 18:34:38 10/22/02 Tue [1]

Xander in S7 is an amalgam of all previous Xanders. He'll show up exhibiting any part of his personality from any season at nearly any time.

Give the guy a break.....

Just kidding, Lij.... ;)

Nope, Xander--or rather, ME, since they are responsible for the way he's written--gets no break from me because I don't think they've worked on or developed his personality since early season 5.

But on a more positive note, I thought he was very sympathetic in last week's ep. And I love the fact that he's been put in a position where he is the one arguing to bend the rules.

Yes, I remember. You too have the power. But, I believe you would not be deleting for the same reason as "just Church" ;-.)

Hi :-.)
