Subject: Some Mothers do Have 'em

Some cyclists are just not road wise. This morning at the bottom of Ngauranga Gorge a mountain biker in front of me riding in the left lane to go round the corner towards Petone just rode across the lane in the face of overtakng traffic to go up to the lights and so on to the city. He didn't look back or give a hand signal of his intentions but just carried on as though there was nothing else around. Immediatly after a car squeezed me for room to get around the corner. It was just beginning to come light and sure he was lit up ok though his clothing was dark colours but all I can say is he was just one of the fortunate ones that got away with it this time.

Garry

Unfortunately, it is people like this who give cyclists a bad name. If we don't respect the highway code ourselves and do our best to be responsible road users we will be driven off (quite literally!) the roads.

Agreed

You might be interested to know the Police are also watching at the moment. We got pulled up in the valley Saturday week ago because one of our number did a wide overtaking manouvre of the other two without looking and signalling. The policeman was concerned that a following vehicle had to break heavily to avoid us. He discussed the colour of our clothing, only one of us was wearing a high visibility vest.

I ride to work most days and these days I always obey the road rules. I frequently have to stop at the traffic lights at the Railway Station to be passed by scores of other riders. I have actually seen the Police issuing tickets to riders at this set of lights. Again cyclists not being seen to do what they expect of other motorists!!!

Yep, I would rather be lit up like an xmas tree than lookign trendy in my black and silver (colour of the road) gear. Check out Jville Cycles and Bicycle Lower Hutt for some wicked fluoro vests that have flashing lights all thru them.. prolly get pulled over for impersonating a cop car!
