You raise a wonderful issue and one I have had rolling around in my head for a LONG LONG time. Remember when that foul jack booted thug John Ashcroft was made Attorney General and people were afraid that Bush was going to have gulags? Didn't happen. Just bear with me on this, cause I think you will see where I am headed, okay?

The Patriot Act came into being after 9-11. Up until that time, the Clinton Administration's inroads to search and seizure and suspension of habeas corpus were legend among the military and law enforcement because we were being watched...by them. Clinton hated the armed forces but loved law enforcement. Why would that be unless you were creating a police state?

So, Bush comes into power office and now we have 9-11, about six years after OKC...like people need to be reminded that we have terrorists who want to do us in?
Bush has been very very careful about using the provisions in the Patriot Act and not abusing them. He is playing the conservative partisan card here. And if we lose that edge, we lose more than just our freedom. The Democratic party lays it out on the table: We are the party of the politically correct. We will tax you to support the nanny state; we will erode the military but beef up law enforcement and the thought police.

Just for laughs and giggles, I did a tangential bit of research on Child Welfare Services. When a Democrat was in office, the abuses were worse. When a Republican or a Libertarian minded soul was in office, the state scaled back on the abuse.

About winning our right to free speech back: The Flying Imams. The airline booted them because of their behavior,
and the resulting fray sort of silenced CAIR.

I have to scoot
