for us. The Constitution does call for Congress to establish a postal system, but of course you know that.

I agree, there should be competition. There IS competition in package delivery--and I can tell you that for me USPS wins in the package delivery area hands down. It's way cheaper, often faster and they don't complain about rural deliveries. FedEx will only come to my house 2X/wk. DHS won't deliver here if we've had rain in the past 3 days or more than 1/2" snow on the ground, so that rules out about 70% of the year. I have to go into town to pick up DHS deliveries. The UPS guy is great--comes to the house, fairly prompt deliveries, nice guy! but it costs an arm and a leg. Nope, when it comes to packages, the USPS is a bargain.

There's also a lot of competition with electronic deliveries (email and faxes) as well as pouch mail. The ammount of first class letter delivery has decreased significantly in the last 5 yrs.

Dh will be the first to admit that postal employees are waaaaaaaaayyyyy overpaid for the work they do. On the other hand, the USPS has experimented with outsourcing some of their work, and the outsourced work is consistently shoddy and late--over half has to be redone by postal employees. So it saves the USPS virtually nothing over paying the outrageous postal wages.

I DON'T think federal funds should go to the USPS--it should be established by Congress but not subsidized. And right now it does just that. And with this new 2c increase the USPS goes from being a break even proposition to a cash cow for Congress.

I think that safe, secure and consistent mail delivery is essential to the welfare of our country. I would have no trouble with competition supplanting the current system, as long as measures were taken to ensure that delivery will not be compromised during crisis. Unfortunately, when you say that you pretty much ensure some kind of federal patronage--and I'm not sure how that would (could) differ from what we now have.

It's OK that you don't like the USPS--there's plenty more that we do agree on that I still think you could make the world a better place if someone put you in charge. :D
