get by without things, I may be able to serve BETTER by restricting what I have, so that I am not one of those who has to be rescued from my luxury when things get difficult?

Interesting thought.

I live very modestly by American standards. And I have experienced "want". I sometimes think that I have been allowed to have this experience so that I can serve, because I won't panic and think, "Oh, no, my gorgeous big house/cars/stuff just went floating away; how can I survive? I've never done anything by/for myself before?"

food for thought--

I hadn't thought that there was an advantage to being poor!
(smile and chuckle)

But now I can consider this as one?

Certainly it wouldn't be tempting for anyone to steal from me, because I don't have very much to take.

(smile and wink)
