I would like to do this at the very end of August. I guess we need to check the rental rates and see what our options are. I wouldn't mind staying at the Luxor again.

I'd be happy to drive a big sedan up if Jeff wants to rent one as I only have one vehicle. This year I'd prefer to fly up to Vegas unless we need to do otherwise.

Well, either time is fine. I believe we can get really good rates, better then Luxor, at the Flamingo. We won't know what those rates are UNTIL May or June. Last year I was getting a lot of notices from Flamingo on hotel rates of 39.00 a night.

You can forget that noise, lunchbox...there's no way I'm renting a vehicle to go to Vegas....not when the car alone is gonna cost 50.00+ a day (unless I get all the funding I need for the radio show, then no big deal, plus I can write it off as a business expense BUT I'm not counting on it since I'm getting more no's the yes's. In fact there's probably a better chance of Ken getting published before ....DOH!.....Damn it.....now what the hell am I to do?

OK...so are we now shooting for Aug 24(Sunday) - Aug 28th (Thurs)? I believe we get the best rates if we go Sun-Thurs.
And what does this mean about Ken? Will the fearsome duo Ken-Tronic and his sidekick Johnny-bot go their separate ways to the city of "Nothing is Real"? Will Johnny-bot take aero-copter while Ken-tronic makes his way via the electo-auto? Or will they keep to tradition and SHut the Hell Up, Get their Asses In The Damn Car and Arrive to Town at a Reasonable Time So The Enigmatic Empathetic Man Isn't Waiting FOR HIS DAMN DOOR KEY!!!!!

I can be there whenever and wherever you three decide.

If it helps, Jeff, I can drive to Phoenix and visit my Mom too,
and afterwards the two of us can drive to Vegas in my car.

I will look into Yahoo Instant messenger. I'm not a big fan of the
chat thing, but I'll give it a shot.

Speaking of Ken's being published, congratulations again.
Ken, in which issue of Future's mag does "The Reader" appear?
I would like to order one. Is it #27 (July/August/September 2002)?

Thanks Curt, I'll keep that in mind as the months move along. Ok....so guys, can we narrow down number of days and which days of the week? I was thinking of Sun through Thurs...thats four nights. John & Ken what say you?

Sun - Thu is 5 five nights, but we certainly don't need that many. I think 3 nights is long enough. To keep costs down they should definitely occur between Sun - Thu. I'm open to any start day between Sun - Tue for our 3 nights.

We need to know when the rates are best to pick actual days. Although business is down during the summer, I remember a couple of conventions going on at that time. Rates climb accordingly, so we want to time our meeting between Vegas summer events. The odds are excellent that there won't be any conflicts on the last week of Aug, but if there are it won't kill me to move our vacation forward or back a week.

>Sun - Thu is 5 five nights...

No John, I was referring to the entire time together Sun - Thurs. Thats Thursday DAY....Wed. night would be the last night.

I suggest we keep it at meeting Sunday afternoon, stay past WED. night and leave on Thurs.

This will give us more time to NOT cram so much in such short time and allow us to sleep once in awhile. Sunday we will meet, get settled and argue over where to eat dinner, that'll take most the evening....keep in mind, as shy as Ken and Curt are, it'll take some time to get reaccustomed to each other. PLUS we'll be up all fucking night through Monday morning....we will have some time to circle up Monday night and Tues night OR play around Tues night and circle up on Wed. night....which will last til dawn...sleep for a few hrs. then leave on Thursday.

As I remember, Sun - Tues wasn't long enough. If you also consider the time it will take arguing about where to go, what to eat, when to sleep, who is gonna pair off while John gambles etc. etc. I believe Sun-Tues will be a disservice to the group. Why cut it short John? I would think from your letters of missing us that you'd be open to more days. Is there something your not telling us?

I would like to be the first one to state that I would like to enjoy an occasional cigar or pipe with Ken while on the trip. Maybe this time, Ken and I should pair up? Keeping with tradition, I should be trying to sleep while Ken keeps me awake with his fucking jokes!!!

Wait a second, back in 2000, didn't we spend much of the time in one room? I believe we shared the double beds. If cost is an issue, we could all just stay in one room? Or is it best, in order to sleep, for the guys who need to sleep while CURT and whomever else stills keeps going & going & going. Now that I think about it, the benefit of two rooms allows the guys in room #1 to talk about the guys in room #2 :)

If I have a cigar with Ken, even outside...there's a chance I'll smell like bologna...I mean cigar smoke...and I want to respect Curt's sensitivity to it. If its NOT an issue, then when there is time, I'd like to sit outside-maybe by the pool(or on Ken's lap)and smoke a big fat one....THEN have a cigar with Ken.

This time I want to establish some sense of an itinerary...I am asking if ANY man has something in particular that he wants to do to get it on the table so I can write it down. **This does NOT mean that we are going to follow a schedule.....I want to make sure that we aren't sitting on our asses trying to decide WHAT to do..when we could have talked it through months before..I'm not going to go through that BS again...and from what I heard men say from the Prescott trip, the same type of shit took place. So lets STOP the ideal of being spontaneous...since its proven NOT to work well for the group.
Any thoughts, lets hear them.

As I remember it, 3 days wasn't enough on the first reunion because we had a lot of catching up to do. We had more than enough time on subsequent meetings. I also want to insure that we have enough time together, but I want to cut down on idle days to save costs of daily room rates and meals.

As for gambling, that really won't be happening unless I hit a big jackpot on a couple of slot pulls because I'm broke and in debt now. On those earlier trips I had zero debt and several hundred in expendable cash.

I think this is a fine idea. Having two rooms is an unnecessary luxury. Maybe we should consider this. Ideally, we wouldn't be couped up in the rooms much to begin with. We just need a place to crash and shower.

What men were heard to utter such balderdash? Let's not even bring up the last reunion because there were too many issues and having an itenerary was not one of them.

If any of you have things you want to do on this trip by all means air them so we can work them in. Some may not agree. If Jeff wants to go bungee jumping, or even more recklessly, eat hot dogs, then you can count me out. Let's see everyone's wish list then. Here is mine:

1. Yak with you guys until our ears burn.
2. Eat at least 1 good meal a day, preferrably 3. Good meaning tasty, not expensive.
3. Drink the occassional beer.
4. Lose the $20 I'm allowing myself to gamble with. That should take about 5 minutes.
5. Take a few walks to see how much has changed in 2 years. I'm sure a lot has. I have no specific places in mind and I think I've seen everything in Vegas I really want to see except for the museum at Belagio.

I still think 3 nights is enough, but if you all want more then we'll do more. Maybe some of you have much longer and more detailed to do lists.

I was hoping all our days would be idle.

Works for me. Hell, I was prepared to sleep on a wet bathmat at the Polo Towers.

Similar to my agenda, except I won't be gambling at all. My $20 will go to a couple fine meals at an all-you-can-engorge buffet. I'll be checking Vegas and travel sites for ideas, though, and may have more must-do items later.

Okay, we've covered a lot of territory here. Perhaps the following will clarify our current situation, communicate my positions, and help arrive at a consensus:

As far a travel arrangements, John wants to fly, and I would prefer that also, I suppose, although I would share the actual driving duties if John is amenable to that. If Curt will drive Jeff to Vegas, that will be fine, but Jeff will still have to hitch a ride from Tucson to Phoenix with John, which might create some schedule conflict if John is trying to catch a flight at Sky Harbor.

As far as timing, I am completely flexible. August is best, though. Which week in August is unimportant to me, but lower rates are somewhat important. I would think Curt might prefer earlier in August, as he will no doubt have some back-to-school considerations with his girls as August progresses. John has to consider work availability. Otherwise, it's just hotel rates we are dealing with.

I agree with John that five nights is a bit much, but I agree with Jeff that three nights is not enough. Jeff's timeline:

Sunday: Meet, get settled, argue, stay up all fucking night
Monday: Sleep, circle up or goof off in p.m.
Tuesday: Circle up and/or goof off
Wednesday: Repeat until exhausted, check out following morning

...sounds good to me.

As far as accommodations, again, I don't care. Low rates somewhere on the strip. Imperial Palace was just fine by me. It was cheap, convenient, clean, and comfortable. There's a part of me that would like to try something different, and I was partial to Mandalay Bay, quite frankly, but cheap, convenient, clean, and comfortable is hard to beat. I assume we are all pretty much in agreement on this.

As far as Yahoo messenger, it would be great if we used it, especially for hammering out stuff like this. It would take a fraction of the time. And it's fun.

As far as Futures Magazine, I am sending everyone their own copy, so don't worry. I get an author rate that is lower, and I did say I would send you copies.

Yes, my days of driving to Vegas are over. I really hate that drive, not only because it's so long, but because it's so incredibly dangerous on that stretch.

I will be flying from Tucson, not Phx. If Jeff comes to visit his mom then we can fly out together from here.

I do want to stick with the last week of August unless we NEED to change that.

I would also like to stay in a new place for the variety of it, but the more I think about it the less I care. After all, we're just going to sleep there. We can look for variety by finding new hang outs for talks. Value and comfort should be the only real considerations.

Then I'll be flying from Phoenix, and I guess we'll all be taking cabs from the airport. I guess we're not out to save money after all!

Okay by me.

And convenience (close to the strip).
