Benny came tous from Gary and Carrie in Michigan. We got off to a rough start but have made a world of progress. As we know the best laid plans run astray. Benny joined a home with a new brother Remmington a 4 year old Crested and Missy a very alfa Yorkie. Benny bonded with Mommy very quickly and his brother and bossy sister. Him and Dad have their moments. My oldest daughter and her husband after waiting for 5 years and lots of doctor's appointments and tears were told that on the Monday before Mother's Day they were going to have a baby to join their family of Two Adults and Remingtons younger brother Orio to make their family bigger by one. Grandma taught Benny to like the many car rides to visit Daddy in Cedar Rapids while Mommy went along to the baby appointments with her daughter. Benny has been known to sit with his head on Daddy's lap if Mommy isn't around. He also sleeps between Mommy and Daddy every night that they are together. Well on November 12 shortly after 3 am my daughter called and was in a lot of pain. I told her to call the doctor. Unfortunately by the time she got to the hospital in Des Moines it was too late to stop her labor. Olivia came into the world 7 weeks premature. My mother tried very hard to take care of Orio for the kids but has COPD and it got to be too much for her. At that time I offered to take Orio but was told no they would work it out. I spent 2 days with my daughter looking at our little angel in the incubator unable to hold or feed her. Olivia was two days old before Mom got to hold her for 10 minutes. During this time Loretta and Dan were driving back in forth 80 miles each day to NICU from their home. On Olivia's 4th day the boarded Orio because they were exhausted and decided to sleep in Olivia room as she was diagnosed with extreme jaundice and a heart defect. During this time my mom called me and told me she needed help because the kids weren't ready for baby to come home. Benny and his siblings Mommy and Daddy drove to Sw Iowa and took over the kids house for the weekend. My dad had picked Orio up at the boarders and he spend 2 hours chasing him around town when he got away from him. We got settled into the house 3 Crested and 1 Yorkie and the now the race track game has a new twist as the house is a big circle. You have not lived until you have tried to assemble a nursery with all of that help. Sunday night the kids came home to get some rest and have what we called Thanksgiving. A day with lots of tears because the kids want the baby home and Loretta was so surprised because the Parent fairies had everything ready including some home repairs and a freshly Winter cleaned and sterilized home. The biggest mistake we did make was putting the bassinette in the bedroom. My oversight because it made her cry she so wants her baby in it. During dinner we did a doggy intervention and explained to the kids that my parents could not keep up with a active Crested in the winter in Iowa and it would be much better for Orio to go visit the family. After many tears and reassurance that it did not make her a bad doggy Mommy to send Orio with us for a while they relented. So now I spend my time here at home with Benny and Missy. Bryan in Cedar Rapids building a Sonic with Remington and Benny.. I drive to CR ever 6 days and leave all the dogs with Dad while I go to to the hospital. Today Olivia is 3 week old. Orio staying with us has led Benny to not being the new kid on the block and a new confidence he wears so well. He loves fitting in with all the other dogs and barks and plays does that famous Crested dance of excitement. He will jump up on Daddys lap and even come to him if his siblings do. Can't be left out. He has become a seasoned traveller and even though he still is scared of going for a car ride has realized he is just going to another home with his same people. It is a lot of work to adopted a dog. But it is worth every moment. I am sure when Orio returns to his home Benny will be sad but he will spend lots of time visiting Orio with his siblings. Then there will be another human for him to love. Benny's life is full of excitement and adventure. His greatest moment is his smile. Yes he smiles. Thank you for our Benny Boy and please know he has found his own forever home. Unconventional but a happy secure home.
