I was also quite upset when my Gracie who is 8 was diagnosed with a grade one heart murmur a few months ago. After doing some research my understanding is that dogs can live many healthy years with a heart murmur and there are things you can do to help prevent it from becoming worse, at least in some situations. I am under the impression that there can be a hereditary factor involved. However other things can lead to heart murmurs. One of them is plaque so keeping the teeth clean can help to prevent heart murmurs from worsening. I asked our vet a lot of questions and I also got information from an on line canine heart health support group.
