How is your little guy doing now? I adopted my little crestie from crest care two and a half years ago. She was 5 years old and quite unsocialized, although from the sounds of things not nearly so bad as your little guy. She was very affectionate with me right from day one, but did not like other people at all. She is still not so crazy about people she does not know, especially at home, but will eventually come around. She is very food motivated so I give her favorite treats to new people being introduced and eventually the desire for the treat overcomes her fear of the new people. I also tell new people not to try too hard and let her curiousity and desire for the treat bring her around on her own. (She used to get so scard when someone came to the door that she would pee) In the beginning I used food of some sort for almost everything but eventually she came to love the praise and petting more than the food. At first she was afraid of most normal day to day things and there are still some things she does not like. Wind for example or suddent noises. She did not play for the first few months or maybe even a year and it is really only recently that she started to be the one who initiates the play. I used to watch her very carefully to find out what it is that she did like and incorporated whatever that was into getting her used to different people and situations whenever I could. I would think that your little guys love of the shower might be a good opportunity for him to find out how much he likes getting a massage and love? When I adopted Gracie our vet told me that it can take two years for a rescue dogs personality to actually come out.
