Subject: Problems with sound

I am still trying to figure out what is wrong with the
sound on my XL. The main problem is that windows crashes
a lot when sound is enabled and it seems to work fine
when it is not. To check the hardware, I run the computer
in DOS mode and did a few tests with sound. The computer
will not freeze in DOS mode. But I noticed that the sound
driver, ACESU.SYS I think it is called, fails to load
completely. Does anyone have the same experience? Is this
driver used by windows? Is there any way to check why the driver fails to load? Is this even important? I also have problems with the CDROM under dos. When the machine is hot, the driver complains that the CDROM drive is not found. After letting the machine cool off for a while, the CDROM dos driver loads fine. Finally, I also have a problem with the floppy drive. The first time the computer is turned on, it works w/o a problem and continues to do so until the machine is rebooted. Then the light on the drive just goes on and off and it won't work even under win98. This seems like a hardware problem since the problem happens before the computer goes into BIOS. The floppy will only work if the computer is really cold. I am beggining to suspect that all the problems I am having are heat related, I installed rain and opened the machine to check the fan. No progress.
So here are my questions. Can the XL be used w/o the battery plugged in? (ie, only with AC). I am thinking that if the battery is not recharging, the temperature should be lower. Also, the floppy sits next to the battery, and that is the part most affected by the heat. How can one keep the computer extra-cold? Where is the sound card physically located? Is there a way to check the temperature of the CPU in real time? Maybe I can compare my numbers with other XLs
I am sorry for such a long post, but as you can see, I am still pretty clueless. Thanks a lot.

-Mario
