Hi Michael,
I had a similar problem a few months back. In my case
the screen would not even show any messages. I eventually
found it was a problem with the CMOS battery. I couldn't get the computer to boot. Then I found that I could boot
it by turning it on, then inmediately off and on again.
The computer would boot, but the clock would always be
bad. Then I read some messages in this forum and found
that there problably was something wrong with the CMOS
battery. I was lucky enough to have one of the newer
machines where the CMOS battery is easily accessible.
I changed it and had no more problems booting (lots of
other problems, but I am working on those now). Anyway,
give this a try and maybe it will work for you.

-Mario
