If this and the other message regarding the fan & floppy light are referring to XL's, there is another possibility besides the CMOS battery:

The CPU has popped out of it's socket. The first time it happened to me was after (ack!) dropping my machine. Mark at Transmonde was out when I called, so I started working on it myself. When I pulled the hard drive out, I could see the processor and could tell that a corner of it was out of it's socket. When Mark called me back he confirmed that that was precisely what had happened and that I could more easily access it from under the keyboard. (He did, of course, say that he wasn't advising it due to warranty issues, but we don't have THAT problem now, unfortunately.)

In addition, he confirmed my concerns about the design -- the CPU is held in place by screws in three corners -- obviously pressure in three corners of a square will cause the fourth corner to lift. I never have been able to get the processor completely seated, but always enough to make the connection.

This same problem has occurred several more times since the first, always after the laptop takes a hard knock, and reseating the CPU has always fixed it.

Below the speaker screen is a strip of plastic which slides to the right, the up & off. You can then flip the keyboard from the top towards you. (**Do not abrubtly pull up or too hard or the keyboard strip connector will come unseated -- simply flip it towards you like a page of a book**) In the center of the keyboard space you will see a brown multi-wire connector; directly above (towards the screen) and underneath the connector you will see the bottom of the processor: The bottom right corner that you see is the one without a screw. I usually use the eraser end of a pencil to gently but firmly push the processor down. USE A SENSITIVE TOUCH WHILE DOING THIS! You don't want to break the chip. (I wouldn't advise doing this if you don't have the tactile sense to forsee the breaking point or if you have no experience with the flexibility vs. rigidity of a circuit board.)

At any rate, this is simply one more possibility to resolve no boot issues -- use the advise at your own risk, etc and I hope it may help someone.
