I had the exact same symptoms on my XL. I had to disassemble the computer to get at the CMOS battery, but when I put in a new one, the computer now works great. When my CMOS was bad, I could usually get the system to boot by pressing the ON/OFF switch from ON to OFF to ON very quickly. When the process worked, the floppy would do its normal groan and I knew it was going to boot.
