It is a long story. My hard disk was broken. I installed Windows 98 on a new hard disk. The display worked fine for a while, after I upgrade IE4 to IE5, the problem started. For about a month, when I turned on the computer, it could not display 256 or 16bit color. I have to change the dispay setting to get it working. Recently, this trick did not work any more.I reinstalled Windows but still have the same problem.

I reinstalled the display drive and the monitor setting as you suggested, but did not have good luck. Thanks.
