Nick,
I have a Vivante SE as well. Last year I struggled for days to get it to recognize a Sony Spressa CD-RW USB drive. I would plug in the cable, and the drive would show up for a second or two in the 'My Computer' window, and then just disappear again. Of course, it reported that everything was working properly, etc.

I contacted Transmonde (before they were out of business) and told them about this. They said I could send the unit in and have it tested, but if they couldn't find a problem then I would have to pay for labor and shipping myself. Yuck. They suggested I find another USB device and see if it works in the SE. I tried a simple USB mouse, and of course, it worked like a charm. So I tried the USB CD-RW drive in another computer and of course, it also worked like a charm. I also tried under Win98 and Win98SE.

So, I guess my point is that maybe the SE's have some small glitch in them that messes with USB. Some devices can handle it, some can't.

I've just given up on USB for my SE.
