Asuming you run Win98

If you want to leave for a 'few hours', you may suspend the computer, so monitor shuts off automatically.

Another option is to place shortcut to a screensaver ( from C:\\windows\\system\\*.scr) on your desktop, so whenever you leave you doubleclick it and if you have monitor shutoff timeout set in controlpanel_powermanagement it would turn off the monitor for you too.
