Hello again Jeff,

Well, the problem comes and goes pretty
randomly. Either it is completely random
or it is associated with moving the computer
from place to place. I couldn't think of
anything else it could be linked to.

I'm guessing that one likely cause of the
problem is a bad contact in either the connectors
or a broken solder joint. (I see a lot of this
in electronics that I build in the lab) I
suppose this idea might be causing me to assume
of a connection with motion that isn't there.

Otherwise it could be a bad backlight/inverter.
My problem sometimes reminds me of the chaotic
flickering and sticking at half-brightness that
you see in a flourescent ceiling light when it is
going bad.

When the problem starts up again I often turn the
computer off, pick it up and tip it at various angles,
tap the case, and open/close the screen a few times to
see if things improve. I can't recall if this strategy
has ever actually worked. :) However, there is a
limit to how much I'll shake it.

This is probably correct. BUT - mine did eventually
return to flickering after just sitting on the desk
for a few weeks with no more disturbance than swapping
drives.

You can see why I have put off sending mine in.
I have to do a compete backup of my files before
I can part with it for 2 weeks. And even then
I will miss it dearly. :) The Sparc Ultra just
isn't nearly as nice!

The good news is I think I'm ready to pursue it
again this afternoon. I should have my files
sorted out by the end of the week.

I thought Harlan's "dim screen" problem that you
responded to on the mailing list sounded a LOT like
some of the symptoms mine shows. Mine at times gets
stuck at "half brightness" during the flickering attacks.
I'm going to mention that to them as well.

thanks,
brooks
