Subject: Noise at boot-up

After 4-5 returns for repair (I've lost count) and at least as many replacement computers, I finally got my computer back today. No sooner did I boot it up, though, than I heard this awful distortion sound right after the BIOS screen (I have the window 98 splash screen turned off). Windows 98 has not begun to load when this occurs. Turning the manual volume control down does nothing to attenuate the distortion. It lasts for about a second but it is quite loud. Any takers?
