I'm sure there are more of these examples of mentally-challenged fundie moms killing their children in Texas, but only a few garner huge national headlines. Most likely, these murders are hushed up in the "tight knit" small towns in which they usually occur and reported as accidents by local authorities who in the past covered up the dark deeds by the KKK.

U.S. stoning trial begins

By LISA FALKENBERG - Associated Press

TYLER, Texas (AP) -- A woman was overcome by delusions of what she believed was God's voice telling her to kill her children the night she bludgeoned her three sons with rocks, her attorney said Monday during opening statements in her murder trial.

"Does she follow what she believes to be God's will or does she turn her back on her God," defense attorney F.R. Files Jr. asked the jury.

Deanna Laney faces two counts of murder for killing two of the boys and one count of serious injury to a child for severely harming the third.

Her lawyers will try to prove she is innocent by reason of insanity. Prosecutors will try to prove she knew right from wrong and is guilty. The state is not seeking the death penalty.

Laney, 39, a deeply religious woman who home-schooled her children in the tiny town of New Chapel Hill, 100 miles southeast of Dallas, called 911 just after midnight on May 10 and told a dispatcher: "I've just killed my boys."

She said God ordered her to do it.

Deputies found 8-year-old Joshua and 6-year-old Luke lying in the front yard in their underwear, skulls smashed and stones the size of dinner plates lying atop their bodies. Their 14-month-old brother, Aaron, was found alive in his crib, bleeding from a skull fracture and with a pillow over his face. He is recovering.

Prosecutors said Monday that Laney first attacked Aaron, striking him with a rock she had hidden under his crib. When he began crying, Laney's husband, Keith, woke up and saw her in the baby's room. With her back to him, he thought she was changing the baby's diaper. She told him: "Everything's OK."

After her husband went back to bed, Laney struck the boy again with a 41/2-pound rock, putting a a pillow over his head after hearing a gurgling sound from the blood in Aaron's throat, prosecutors said.

"Aaron Laney will never be the same," prosecutor Matt Bingham said, adding that the boy's vision has been impaired and he will never live independently.

Psychiatric experts concluded Laney had four psychotic episodes before the killings and probably had suffered from delusional psychotic disorder for at least three years.

Another Texas jury rejected an insanity defense for Andrea Yates, the Houston woman who drowned her five children in their family's bathtub in June 2001 and told police the devil told her to do it. She is serving a life sentence.

Like Laney, Yates called 911 after the killings, which some observer say could be seen by jurors as an awareness of wrongdoing.
