I appreciate your response and I must first request where is this subjective "line" you mentioned that one should not cross in respect to doing more harm than good for one's cause?

The media covering the protest, most definately, will have more control than the individuals involved in said civil disobedience of how their message is presented to the public at large, so the supposed widespread "injury" factor rests with how the information outlets collectively portray such events that took place. That is why those who may be sympathetic toward the cause need to be made aware of alternative efforts and supplemental actions by the ad-hoc organization they might like to be a participant.

Basically, taking to the streets requires quite a lot of responsibility and a trusted spokesperson/committee that can articulate the reasons to those who could very well make more people aware as to why such protests are happening at this juncture. Here's a link to a number of interesting perspectives on the matter of protests in general and the current burning issue that has smitten us all to some significant degree:

War protests: Your verdict

Anti-war protesters took to the streets en masse throughout the world again this week to voice opposition to the conflict in Iraq.
The Stop The War Coalition in Britain are co-ordinating protests targeting Labour MPs "who broke their word to constituents never to support a war without UN authority", the group's chairman Andrew Murray said.

On Friday tens of thousands of Iranians took part in the first big anti-war demonstration in Iran. There were other protests in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Egypt and Jordan, and in Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Do you think the protests still serve a purpose? Are you taking part in any of the marches?
