Leo, my husband was a natural lefty, but his parents were told by their pediatrician they should try to change it. So, they put splints on his arm and taught him to favor his right. He is a brilliant person, but has lots of problems being with other people in a social setting. I swear it all goes back (at least in part) to his inability to become comfortable with his body.

And, as for moi, I appeared to be really "different" to my first few grade school teachers. I was slow and didn't read very well. Then, suddenly, in third grade, I became the best and fastest reader in class. I got so far ahead of the rest of the class, I began to "doodle" instead of paying attention. The teacher defended me by telling the other students "if they could keep up with the rest of the class like I did, they were welcome to WANDER OFF!" That teacher was an exception to the rule. I found most of them wanted to force me to comply with the left-brained, pragmatic way of thinking. I tried, and I still try - sometimes, but I'm just not very good at it.

I will say this, when I throw pottery or paint, garden, or walk in the woods, I get a little "zooey". It's like I lapse into some kind of "other place" or I'm drugged or something. When I emerge from my studio, I'm not able to function with knives or food in the kitchen. Don't ask me to make sense for awhile. It's so weird. But it passes. SPACED OUT!
