If only the Normans had extended their reach across the Rhine, they'd have taught the Teutons the correct alphabet. I have a theory that Germany's militaristic character in the 20th century was due, not to Bismarck or its being un-unified for so long (as many historians claim), but to those damned Saxon hold-over letters; Romans reveling in gladiator combat were postively sedate compared to the Saxons.
