The script draft I have, IMO, is a bit more �shippery� in how the writer thought three scenes should be filmed. Of course, the director takes the writer�s words and placed his own interpretation on them. From the early draft, here is the writer�s perspective:

At the end of the scene where Mac says she doesn�t have a comeback to Bud dying. Here�s what the early draft says:

Harm: �You won�t need one. He�s going to make it.�

Direction � Mac mists up.

Harm: �He�s going to make it, Mac.�

Direction � Mac begins to softly cry. Harm holds her.
(In what aired, he didn�t, I don�t think �hold� her. He put his arm on her shoulder).

At the start of the end scene, this is the direction from the early script:

INTERIOR USS GUADALCANAL � WAITING AREA � NIGHT

CLOSE ON HARM AND MAC. He sits beside her and offers his hand. Mac grabs it, squeezes it tight. Feeling Harm�s strength. His resoluteness. And appreciating it beyond what words can say. (I think in what aired, he takes her hand. I guess either way, it is shippery)

The very end scene, after they learn Bud is stable, here�s the direction from the early draft:

CLOSE ON HARM

Direction � He�s crying. All of his anxiety. . .all of his strength. . .finally pouring out of him.

Camera widens as Mac sits and puts her arms about him. This time, she imparts her strength to him, and it is like there is no one else in the world but them.

END OF SHOW
