Here's a scenario to ponder...

1. Hudson beats Narragansett next week.
2. Lunenburg beats Murdock next week.
3. Clinton beats West Boylston next week and Maynard on Thanksgiving day.
4. West Boylston beats Ayer Thanksgiving day.

That will result in a 5-way tie in Division 3. What happens then?

The old ratings system was made up of two numbers: "own value" and "opponents value". Own value was made up of points for each win: 10 points for a win over someone in your own division, 8 points for a win over someone in next lower division and 12 points for a win over someone in next higher division (impossible for Div 1 teams). Opponents value gave a team 2 points for every win by a team's opponents, but the credit was given only for opponents that a team beat. Points were halved for ties.

The system had its problems. It was risky to play strong teams- even a narrow loss would result in zero points for both the "own" and "opponents" categories. Teams with weak schedules could pile up lots of points with wins, without paying too much of a penalty in the "opponents" category.

I think the Sagarin system is a better way of judging a team with fair consideration of schedule strength.
