Subject: Tie Breakers
If there is a tie at end of season, which looks very possible in Div 1, who goes to the Super Bowl?

According to the MIAA, tie-breakers are handled in the following way:
1) Head to head
2) Fewest league losses
3) Most League wins
4) Eliminate last two calendar year Super Bowl participants
5) Coin flip
Seems silly to elimate a team if they have been to the Super Bowl in the last 2 years.

Correction -- f-ball, 07:30:50 11/07/02 Thu
These are the Central Mass tiebreakers:
1) Head to Head
2) League Ratings (Former CMass rating system)
3) Division Ratings (Former CMass rating system)
4) Overall ratings for all divisions (Former CMass rating system)
5) Coin Flip
My first post is for EMass. Sorry.

What are the former CMASS ratings? How are they figured?

The CMass rankings was the system used by the MIAA to determine who went to the Super Bowl when it was CMass only. It's similar to the BCS where strength of schedule and margin of victory came into play as well as bonus points for playing a team in a higher division. I have no idea what the formula is.

Here's a scenario to ponder...
1. Hudson beats Narragansett next week.
2. Lunenburg beats Murdock next week.
3. Clinton beats West Boylston next week and Maynard on Thanksgiving day.
4. West Boylston beats Ayer Thanksgiving day.
That will result in a 5-way tie in Division 3. What happens then?

Re: Tie Breakers -- Expert, 15:53:05 11/09/02 Sat
The old ratings system was made up of two numbers: "own value" and "opponents value". Own value was made up of points for each win: 10 points for a win over someone in your own division, 8 points for a win over someone in next lower division and 12 points for a win over someone in next higher division (impossible for Div 1 teams). Opponents value gave a team 2 points for every win by a team's opponents, but the credit was given only for opponents that a team beat. Points were halved for ties.
The system had its problems. It was risky to play strong teams- even a narrow loss would result in zero points for both the "own" and "opponents" categories. Teams with weak schedules could pile up lots of points with wins, without paying too much of a penalty in the "opponents" category.
I think the Sagarin system is a better way of judging a team with fair consideration of schedule strength.

According to official tie-breaking rules, former CMASS ratings will apply...in the event of a tie, it looks like Clinton would have the nod for the Superbowl berth based on the calibur of teams that they have played during the season. Not saying that Nashoba, Gardner, or Southbridge are powerhouses - but when the divisions were set up over two years ago that's how they aligned. Clinton has beat all three of those teams. BUT...they would still need to beat West Boylston AND have Hudson beat Narragansett (which will be difficult at best). I don't know, best to wait until after this friday night's games to measure it up. All I can say is WOW!
