I had no choice but to watch Kevin Kline’s Broadway version of Cyrano de Bergerac last night and to my surprise…I LOVED IT!!!

I dug the Steve Martin’s version (there’s a melancholy memory associated with that version that I won’t get in to at this time though if I did share it with you you’d probably see how my mind works…in conjunction with my heart). However, Kevin Kline’s mellifluous rendering of the incredible dialog whipped me into a frenzy on numerous occasions.

Kline is amazing. MOTHER OF GOD, did I just write that? Indeed I did. I couldn’t believe the command he possessed over the words coming out of his mouth. And this was a play. He got no cuts to optimize the words in bite-size takes. This was a continuous stream of brilliance with Kline having to go for upwards of 20 minutes without exiting the stage. How immersed was he into this performance? Did he lose his mind during this production? How many mgs of Adderall does this man consume? And what is his regiment? All at once…or steadily throughout?

Un-Be-LIEAVEABLE!

And I was right about saying that Jennifer Garner surprised me in “Juno” as her Roxanne destroys the Daryl Hannah’s. The Puerto Rican dude from “Rescue Me” plays Christian and he can act (he’s done some Woody Allen’s) and Chris Sarandon matches wits with Kline before…well, as I cannot be certain that you’ve seen it, I shall hold my tongue.

The arc of the original story is MUCH different from the one I saw as a kid, though that Martin version does capture the spirit…and leads Middle Class kids to great art, by putting something in front of them that they can handle.

STEVE MARTIN IS A POPULIST!
