Gennifer I started out in around 1979 with eastern euro import hard as nails rotts. Thats where I cut my teeth working with big dogs (or they cut mine Im still not sure). With the Rott you have more choices if your wanting an actual working dog. The rott although a big mollosoid in my view is actually accepted more than the boerboel if your around the high fallutin sport crowd. The boerbeoel as a whole is more athletic, has more wind, less issues with rank drive. But an actual healthy working boerboel with the correct temperament and drives is hard to come by. Don't believe half the crap you read on most of the "breeders" websites. There are a few good breeders who are actually trying to get back to the original working boerboel. The rest of them are beholden to this registry or that registry. None of which offer any kind of objective testing for breeding stock. So the dogs are measured against a "standard". Which to me means doodly squat!! Unfortunately the trend seems to be going bigger is better. Which if all the breeders fall in line. Will be the death nail to the breed.

I would caution you if you decide to give a working boerboel a try (if you can find one) to be prepared. It's lots of dog to deal with and not for the faint at heart.....or the inexperienced!

Feel free to email me if you would like my suggestions on breeders.

My best wishes to you in finding that one for you!!
