Im chiming in on this topic. I have seen it play itself out over the years with several breeds. This is not unique to the boerboel. Here is how I see it.

Boerboel= working farm dog originally designed to work on the farm as a utility dog. Those that require a working dog in this capacity aren't looking for a pet and aren't going to feed a hungry mouth that does nothing. Well bred working dogs are naturally produced from selection. Inferior dogs are culled and only the strongest dogs are used for breeding.

Modern Times= little to no use for a strong working dog used as a utilitarian animal. Strong desire for a big dog as a showpiece. You described the rest of the story in your commentary.

Your never going to be able to control what others do with a breeding program no matter the complexity. There will always be a core group of the hardcore (Harris for example) who will ignore the latest greatest fads and stay true to their vision and not alter their program. These will be the breeders who actually improve the breed over time. They will also do their best to place the dogs from their program where they will be given a chance to prove out.
