Although Jen, Marshland K-9 and David makes some good points I feel Jenny is right on with her views.
Since most of our involvement with the breed is more focused
on the dogs already in bad situations we have a different perspective and often see issues that your average Boerboel enthusiast may not.
In just the three years we have been involved with the breed
we have watched the number of new breeders grow tremendously, and we have also watched the number of dogs in trouble grow by a large margin.
There is allot more out there then people realize if you really start to look.

Yes there may be some new and talented people coming on to the scene but the reality is that there are far more people breeding who just should not be. The bad apples far out number the good and because of crafty marketing strategies the average prospective Boerboel owner has little chance of finding or even knowing the difference between a top shelf breeder, average one or bad one. Lets face it, a very high number of breeder web sites look and say almost the exact same thing...word for word sometimes.
People often only can see what that breeder wants them to see.
You also have to factor in the not so nice breeders that you won't see in popular advertising media.
I will use Maryland as an example, ever wonder why there are so many Boerboels there in need of help? Its because you have people breeding them out of their basements and selling them for $500 a pop.
This is a fact...
Most new owners don't find out they have made a bad choice until it's to late. Because of this not only do individual dogs suffer so does the reputation of the breed as a whole.

Perhaps Boerboels will simply devolve into 2 separate types/breeders. That has happened with the Pittbulls, you have your Razors Edge and you have the Thug line, but do either get treated differently in the eye or the public or BSL?

I agree with Jen in that the last thing I want to see is the Boerboel go down the same way the Pittbull and Rottie have but..it already is and its got a good head start.
And this is really the point to this entire post.

Don't get me wrong I certainly don't blame breeders as a whole for the problems in front of us as I agree with Jen that there is an increased population of idiots who are getting the dogs...perhaps the one area where I feel euthanasia has a place in society...the over population of idiots τΏ~
