HI John,

I have a DKH Boerboel(male) and a Presa Canario(female) from Big Paws Presas. I have Boerboel experience, but this is my first Presa. I live out in the middle of the desert in Northern Nevada and the dogs are my constant companions and property gardians. The Boerboel is totally into keeping an eye on his people, if we see other people or vehicles he is right between you and the stranger. The Presa has a ton more prey drive and is always more interested in finding a rabbit to chase than anything else. The Boerboel never gets too far away from me, but the Presa is always hunting. The Presa can out run the Boerboel, but the Boerboel is heavier and stronger.

Both dogs have been easy to train, good with other dogs and animals, safe and sane around visitors. Both dogs love attention and affection. The difference for me is that the Boerboel is a better personal companion/guardian and is a very low maintenance easy keeper. The Presa is more prey driven and a much higher maintenance dog. I always know where my Boerboel is (with in reach), always yelling at the Presa to "come here".

I don't know if these differences are breed or individual traits. If something bad were to happen I would want my Boerboel around. If I had an opportunity to do any kind of protection work, schutzhund,or other dog compeititon I would pick the Presa.
