Jenny a dog trained for drugs/explosives detection no matter the breed are out of necessity of excessive drive hence I can very well see those dogs living separate and apart from their handlers. However most K-9 dogs are either cross trained in that they are trained for detection/tracking and apprehension or just apprehension. In those cases the dog in most instances in the USA lives with its handler.
