Back when I used to train Field Trial dogs for horseback competition it was widely known that to be competitive, one must trial an English Pointer...occasionally one would see the same ability in a Setter, rarely in anything else. These two breeds had the set of abilities selected for from generations of breeding to cover a LOT of ground, hit objectives, and find birds thinly scattered over miles of country.

I knew a guy who made it his life's ambition to get Weimerieners to hunt in this way, big run, lots of drive, hard going dogs. He did make huge changes to the classic way in which this very versatile hunting dog performed his job. This breed typically worked close, methodically, great for dense cover, and best of all, made a hunting dog for a wide range of game and environment...upland, waterfowl, small game, and even found themselves in packs night hunting. Problem was, when this guy made significant changes to how the dogs hunted, he lost the breed's ability to sit still in a blind, lost the natural desire for the dog to hunt methodically in heavy cover, and pretty much just ended up with a dog no longer suited for its most valued abilities...and one that STILL could not best the Pointer at the Pointers game.

Boerboels are the farmers big dog, versatile, and valued and capable for many utility functions, protection being one of them...but let's not change him to try to compete with herding dogs at herding dog games. By the way, when was the last time you saw a German Shepherd Dog beat a good Border Collie at the Border Collie game??
