I wonder just how useful outcrossing would be to the breed as a whole. Sure, I can see the benefits to someone like Andrew who wants a dog for a very specific purpose, but other than that, I think we probably have enough on our plates sorting out the wheat from the chaff already within the breed. I think as a breed we suffer from a lack of proper information and have to rely too much on guesswork and repeating mistakes already made. I would have thought that you would need an intimate knowledge of several generations of both breeds to embark on this type of fairly extreme breeding program and almost unlimited resources to carry it out effectively. I suppose how you go about it depends on whether you are looking for a true crossbred dog that excels over and above both parent breeds or whether you are looking to improve one breed by introducing traits or strengths of another while still retaining the original breed characteristics.
I'm with you on the full disclosure issue. People deserve to know exactly what they are buying and getting themselves into and I've never been a great admirer of sneaking stuff in by the back door.

Jenny
