Subject: My reflection

It was an exciting experience to make the prototype and test it, because it gave me the feeling that our design had become real product used by real users. A problem of making the prototype was how to make the device look and feel "real". We had to use a 2-D software program to simulate a real 3-D hardware device. We didn't have time to do 3-D graphics, so our solution was to show the front view, back view and bottom view of the device in the demo software. Another problem was that we must show the user how to use our demo software before the tests, such that the test results would be minimumly biased by factors of using software demo instead of using the real device. Our solution was to spend about 5 minutes explaining to the user that the demo simulates a real device of the same size, and show them how to see the back or bottom side of the device, how to push a button, etc. We used the "think aloud" method for testing. I found this method much more informative than just asking questions, because we got to know about the user's responds, anticipations, complaints, and sometimes they even gave very good suggestions.
