My grandmother always told us that when they had wakes in the house they would need to keep an eye on the guys. Most people would hold the wake in their own parlor. When the guys got drunk they would frequently take the body out of the casket and dance with it. She also said that sticking cigarettes and booze in the corpse happened a lot.

My uncle told me that the Flynn boys up the street gave their father a ride down the hill on a sled because he loved to sled.

I saw an establishment in a small town in Ireland - Murphy's Funeral Home and Lounge. There pub was a funeral home in the front and a bar in the back. That was a sharp businessman.

It was close to that when I was growing up in North Scranton. Reagan's Funeral Home had a backroom where all the guys went to drink while the ladies sat out front.

The term wake comes from the old days when they used to hold a vigil over the corpse in case it came back to life. It wasn't uncommon for that to happen. I really don't think we need to do that anymore. I hate it.
