Subject: Besiktas fire Nouma for obscene gesture

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Besiktas fired French striker Pascal Nouma on Tuesday for sticking his hand into his shorts after scoring in a weekend match against Fenerbahce.

The forward, long plagued by disciplinary problems, celebrated his eighth minute goal in his side's 2-0 win by ripping off his shirt and waving to fans with his other hand buried deep in his shorts.

The action shocked many in conservative Turkey, sparked an
investigation by the television watchdog and launched scores of outraged newspaper columns. "What Nouma did at the Fenerbahce match was unsuitable for Turkish traditions and customs. We cannot put up with such things. The board has dissolved his contract," Besiktas chairman Serdar Bilgili told reporters in televised remarks.

The dismissal will weaken the squad of the league leaders as they make a final six-game push for the Turkish title with Galatasaray only one point behind.

There was no immediate comment from the player, who appeared in public on Monday to apologise for his behaviour.

His turbulent career at Besiktas began in the 2000-2001 season when regular goals and a flamboyant Istanbul nightlife won "Disco" Nouma the hearts of Besiktas fans.

He left for a year when he failed to secure a regular place at Olympique Marseille and returned to Besiktas this season on a contract littered with good-behaviour clauses.
