Subject: vents/tubes that protrude from the roof

The four or five vents (actually they look like small tubes) that come out of my roof about a foot each -- do they need to be covered? Or screened? I'm not sure of their purpose but my inspector said that it looked like a squirrel might have chewed away any previous covering to these outlets/vents. Can someone give me a better understanding of what these vents are for and how best to cover them? Or not at all?

The PVC pipes that come through the top of your roof is for your plumbing. These are typically black pipes that are usually between 1 1/2" to 4" in diameter. I talk some about them in this posting to the forum HERE. (click to view) There are no need for them to be covered because they lead to your plumbing system and any rain that that might fall into them goes to the same place your sink and other waste water goes. Any sort of screening installed over these are home made by an homeowner because I have never ran across any thing made to screen these off. I can't believe you paid a guy money and he didn't give you any relative information on what these things were and even if they are usually capped off or not. I think I ran across one reroof in my life that had them screened off and it was done by the homeowner.

Hope this helps,
Tim Soth / A Roofer
