Subject: Flat Roof Replacement Instructions Needed Badly...

My 1970's flat roofed house in need of a new roof and I was wondering if anyone out there can give me the steps to replacing it myself?

I'm an avid do-it-yourselfer with a lot of tools, a local building supply shop and some readily available cheap labor. I need someone who would coach me via Email or phone and tell me the steps involved instead of me just going up there and ripping the roof off incase I find a whole slew of trouble underneith.

I can supply pictures of my roof that shows a couple of skylights and the usual stacks from the laundry and bathrooms. I would just like to know if this is something I could do myself or do I need to call in the experts or a mixture of both? I live in Southern California.

I was actually going to practice on my garage roof as it needs replacing too, although it has no skylights or stacks of anykind.

Any and all help/information would greatly be appreciated.
Cheers,

Steve

I recommend hiring a contractor. If you go up there to do it yourself, be aware of the stories of houses being burnt down by the torches for applying a Modified Bitumen. The underside has to exceed 400 degrees and if you give it too much heat you can ruin the product. I always have a fire extinguisher on the roof nearby when installing this stuff. You might consider some of the different options in the installation of flat roofs. I have a post HERE where I offered a link to a site that covered many of your flat roof options.
