Subject: Roll Vent

How should a roofer install a "Roll Vent"? Is the house peak cut to allow ventilation?

For all ridge venting the peak is cut open to allow venting. As far as installing roll vent my company doesn't install that product anymore. We prefer to use the corragated ridge vent that comes in 4' or 5' pieces. Its more ridgid where the the roll venting that we use to install in the late 80s was more likely to compress restricting the venting capabilities. It costs a little more but worth the investment. Probably an extra $20 in cost at most to the contractor. After either product is installed the ridge is installed over it. Another thing about the roll venting was the manufacturer required a strip of paper to be installed on top of the product before the ridge was installed.

Hope this helps,
Tim Soth / A Roofer
