Subject: attempting porch roof split repair

Hello:
I am coming across a front porch roof problem. It is a simple /\ formation, standing 4' out from the front door, supported by columns on either side. its inside "ceiling" is made of slatted interlocking wood. One winter, a massive block of ice, roof-wide (we got a snow belt afterwards, no problems since) fell on the porch roof. This 1.5" split the once joining front wood pieces below - criss-crossing nails visible inside, as well as seperating the ceiling slats. I temp-fixed this with a galvanized sheet covering the roof peak. I also tried ratcheting a nylon belt over the roof portion which joined the split slightly, but it came back undone when pressure was released. Any ideas on how to repair this split for good?

Thank You,
Scott Barnard

"front wood pieces below"

Not getting a good visual, not sure what this term means but your description of what happened makes me think its separating at the peak in the A-frame so I will make suggestions concerning this being the problem and as if it is a composition or shake roof.

Remove the ridge where the rafters are under the roof deck underneath then ratchet it back into place to get it where you want it. You'll then want to take hurricane straps and run them over the ridge on top of the rafters and make sure to nail 16 penny nails into every whole that the strap offers you for nailing not missing the rafter with any of them. Make sure these straps are tight. If not, when you release the ratcheted strap, any play that you left in the strap will again show as a gap. For some additional support you could also nail in another board between the two rafters at the peak of the A-frame. You'll now want to release the ratchet strap and install some new ridge.

In my photo gallery there is a job described as "Mobile Home Landmark 30yr" and the third picture of those thumbnails show how these straps work.

Hope this helps,
Tim Soth / A Roofer
