you multiply the 40ft by 24ft which is 960 square foot which means you have 9.1/2 square feet which means you need 28,1/2 bundles of shingles

First off, the calculation comes to 960sq feet. This doesn't account for the roof pitch if you are only measuring floor space. That is 9.6 squares not 9 1/2 sq ft. 1sq=100sq ft. Materials come in packages from 3bdls to a square to 6bdls to a square depending on the composition. At 3bdls to a sq 29 bundles will cover 9.66 squares. If you are using the same three tab product for starter and gable trim you'll want to add two more bundles to that. You'll also want to add at least another bundle if you are cutting ridge out of your three tab. Always allow a waste factor. I would order a minumum 32 bdls for a gable roof and 34 or 35 bdls for a full hip house for a completed job with ridge.
