Subject: Laminated Asphalt vs Metal Roofing

We are thinking of replacing our current roof and are not sure whether we should replace with Laminated Asphalt or Metal Roofing. We understand that Metal is more durable and maintenance free but costs significantly more. Are there any other factors that we should be considering? Any comments on the appearance of laminated asphalt products these days? BTW we live in northern California, just in case climate is a factor.
