Subject: Addition to a gambrel roof

I have a Dutch Colonial home with a gambrel roof. I want to add a room addition onto the back of the house. Which style of roof, shed or A-frame would look better on this style of house?
The second story windows are low and the new roof will be at a low pitch.

You could also consider a flat roof that you might install torch down on. It has a parameter wall around it so it can't be seen from the ground. Make sure the contractor frames in saddles with slight pitches running to the scuppers for proper drainage. You probably don't want this in a snow load area though.

You really don't want to install cedar shakes or a composition an anything less the 4/12 and it be best to come up with whatever idea would be best to keep the roof pitch at an acceptable level. If you have for instance only 4' from the window down to the ceiling that the new roof will start at, your new room can be no more then 12' out from the wall when you use a shed roof design that will end up running right up under the windows.
I would think an a-frame might be best because then you can calculate height by width. You can run out as far as you want from the house and for instance if the width of the room was 18' you could maintain a 4/12 pitch and only have to add a height of 3' off the ceiling.

Hope this helps,

A Roofer
