Subject: Uneven roof deck

The Framers on my house did a poor job of making the roof deck flat, apart from ripping it up and doing again what options do I have so that the uneven surface does not telegraph through the shingles. I will be using a 30 year Timberline shingle and it is a hip roof.

I suppose that it must have been an addition that they didn't plan in evenly to the pre existing roof deck? If that is the case then if the roof is out of plane with the deck by 3/8" for instance you would want to sheet 3/8" plywood over the decks that plan into the higher side leveling them out. If it was out of plane by 2" then you'll want to nail 2x2 over all the rafters then sheet over them with a 1/2" plywood to bring them level. If your roof has sagged from the weight of the roof over the years and the rafters free span the weight of the roof from the wall to the top ridge I suggest building a pony wall in the attic in the middle of the span over a wall then setting it on the ceiling rafters and pound it into place against the roof rafters forcing the sag out. You'll want to pick a spot hopefully where a ceiling is on a wall. If you don't and the span in the house is a large area you could transfer the sag into the ceiling in the house. This is something you don't want to do.
