Jeremiah Chapter 1

God looked at the southern kingdom, the apple of his eye, and saw a broken world. It seemed everyone was sinning. This sin came in several forms, most notably the sin of idolatry. Verse 16 actually shows that idolatry can include the preoccupation with your ambitions, the future and your works. It makes me think about how even working for a church, doing the things that God can use most directly to minister to the lost can become an idol. During this time, God called a man named Jeremiah. Verse 5 gives us a summary of one of my church's favorite Psalms, of Psalm 139. It says "I have known you since before conception and I love you." At the end of the chapter, God says that He ordained Jeremiah to be a prophet. Like the great prophet Moses before him, Jeremiah was a bit nervous. He said that he was young and not good at speaking. God put his hand to Jeremiah's mouth and said, "Behold, I have put My words in your mouth." (Verse 9). From here, God tells Jeremiah about the upcoming destruction of the kingdom.

From the footnotes in my Bible, it is interesting to note that our responsibility, if we are not called to a particular area, is to love, obey, and serve God until our mission is made clear. God told Jeremiah that He would be with Jeremiah through the bad times. Bad times will happen, but it pays to hang tough with God. He will come through.

In Caretaker, we met the crew and learned of the strange circumstances that brought them to the Delta quadrant. The Maqui crew did seem like a good fit because they had rebelled against the Federation. Harry Kim didn't seem up to the challenges that these circumstances would require. Tom Paris and Tuvok were hated by at least one faction of the crew or another. Even Captain Janeway seemed to question her choices. Later she would say "captains don't choose their missions, their missions choose them." That's how God works. He chooses our paths and the timing for us, we just go along for the ride. As we bide our time, we need to make use of it effectively. This means preparing ourselves for whatever God will bring our way.
