Subject: Chapter 2

God used prophets as His mouthpiece. When He needed to give the people a message, He told the prophets who would repeat it. The prophets as well as the priests also reminded the people of their history. They told this story repeatedly for four primary reasons: 1) remind them of God's faithfulness, 2) make sure people would not forget 3) emphasize God's love for them, 4) remind them they were close to God. We no longer have prophets to tell us about God; instead, we have the Bible and the church. We are also instructed to remember and be willing to tell our story to others. Our stories, the church, and the Bible all help us to do the things that prophets used to do.

This chapter answers the question, "Why is God punishing Judah?" The answer is, they turned from Him and began following false gods. After the times of David and Solomon, Israel had several evil kings. They made alliances between Judah and countries like Assyria and Egypt, countries that had a lot of strength, but didn't believe in the same God as the Israelites. The people believed that by creating these alliances, they were going to benefit. Instead, this brought on God's wrath. The people no longer thought about the God that the prophets told them about; they only cared about what seemed to be important at the time to them. These important assets included material possessions and defense. The things they should have relied on God to provide for them.

Voyager Example: In "Alliances" our favorite crew finds themselves working their way through Kazon space. They have no friends, they only have themselves and their ship and their enemies constantly fought them. Though Janeway didn't like the idea, because she didn't trust the aliens she had to choose from, she decided to try to solve the problem "the Maquis way". The crew found a race that created an alliance with them. However, in the end, we learn that Janeway's feeling was correct. When she compromised her values by pursuing a partnership with a culture with a very different code of conduct from hers, not only did she have to face a potential for giving up technology, but she found herself in the middle of a war that she didn't want to put herself or her crew in. She finally had to revert back to her Starfleet principles and leave her alliance.
