Subject: Chapter 3

This was written during the time that the northern kingdom was conquered and controlled by a foreign nation. The southern kingdom hadn't faced that fate yet. The southern kingdom, which included Judah, the apple of God's eye, saw everything that had happened to the Northern kingdom, but refused to learn from it. In fact, they thought that they were better than the northern kingdom. God, on the other hand, believed they were worse. The northern kingdom lost their faith, but the southern kingdom pretended they did all the right things while worshiping other gods. The footnotes in my Bible say "to live without faith is hopeless, to express sorrow without change is treacherous and unfaithful." This whole chapter seems to drive home the idea that in order to repent, you have to change your ways. Whether those ways are your attitude or your actions, you have to make a change. Also in this chapter we see God almost begging Israel to turn back to Him, to make that repentance.

Voyager Example In the episode "Repentence" we meet Iko, a murderer who as far as we can tell is as cold blooded as they come. He had a problem in his brain that caused him not to have a conscience. After a fight with the guards in his cell, he went to sickbay where the Doctor found the problem and he had a guilty conscience for all the things he did. Only because he felt bad about those things did the crew, and Seven (who had her own sins to feel bad for) especially, try to help him. In the end, he was still given the death penalty, which he took without argument. He understood that there were penalties for the many murders he committed. In contrast, there was a prisoner in a cell across from him who explained that he was targeted because of his race. At the end, he told Neelix that he has the same problem as Iko and should be given special consideration as well. Neelix picked up on where his heart was, his desperation and walked out without ever looking back.
