Subject: Model train in Transportation room

[excerpt from e-mail message]

In reference to your question about the train layout being two levels, the
answer is no. The operating layout circled the second story mezzanine, you
may wish to sketch this out as we go.

Access was via stairs only on the west
end of the wing. Upon ascending these stairs, you were greeted with several
old publiticy posters from the various railroads that served southern Cal.
The glassed-in layout started on the south wall (bear in mind we're moving
counter-clockwise around the room) with the desert areas. After several
generic desert towns reminiscent of places like Amboy, Needles, Cabazon and
Mojave...the scenery started to change into mountains, depictably Cajon Pass
and the old SP main line through Soledad Canyon.

From there, the trains
entered a tunnel as they made their 180 degree turn to run down the north
wall. There were more old advertisments and such on the east wall and there
was a door in the middle which I assume led to the operations, maintenance
and storage area for the layout display.

After exiting the tunnel on the
eastern end of the north wall, the mountains gave way to civilization with
orange groves, larger towns, the LA harbor and lastly, a final but short run
down a beachline....then back into a tunnel for another 180 degree turn to
head east again. At the end of the layout on the west end were still more
advertising posters and the stairs down. As a note, a wall separated the up
and down portions of the stairs.

As far as the main floor is concerned, I remember a replica of the
"golden spike" in a small enclosure and some displays on trucking and I
believe that McDonnell-Douglas had a display about their Long Beach facility.
There were a few more items of railroad interest on the main floor, but they
were all static displays and didn't hold my attention very long.
