I agree on this. I provided care to the creatures of one who valued his "pets" based, seemingly, on how exotic they were and how much money he paid for them.

He had a German Shepherd, a goat and two deer. He had the goat the longest ... when he bought a fence for the deer, he dumped the goat outside of the fence on a short chain, as he didn't think she was "worth" feeding the expensive deer feed (game deer feed and racing horse oats). The goat was overweight off vegetation before he'd gotten the deer feed, but for the while she was on the deer feed, actually lost weight. Between the two deer and the goat, they consumed maybe $80 or so worth per month. The goat and deer didn't have much problems. The German Shepherd was a toy he simply dumped off on a neighbor ... I guess just too 'common' for him. He couldn't stand having a dog in the house, even though she was quiet and housebroken, and the deer fencing was not adequate dog fencing (it was very strong and tall, but dogs had no problem going underneath it). (By contrast, he let the deer inside and they trashed it)

In terms of how I'd "value" them as companions, the deer would have been bottom on my list ... they only came to me for food and were otherwise fairly unsocial -- they did not make for 'companions' by any definition I hold to. The goat tolerated me, but was a bit standoffish and didn't care (didn't hate, but didn't like either) being around anyone. The German Shepherd was somewhat codependent, and the one I would have valued the most as she actually sought companionship.

A good companion to me, of any species, is one that /desires/ my companionship. I'll provide care for any creature I can in need, but I cannot force any to be a companion nor will I try. I don't rate a companion's 'value' by how exotic or expensive they are, but by how strongly they need me. I can't say I like wolfdogs most ... what being I like most is not a particular 'breed' but an individual, my own German Shepherd companion.
